The position that you sit at a cash game poker table is of immense importance. If you’ve gone through the routine we have suggested in order to select the best cash game table to maximise your chance of profit, but choose to sit in the wrong position at the table you will often be in a worse situation than if you were seated at a totally unsuitable table. This is the reason why you will see full tables that have several players waiting for the chance to join them in correct seat position whilst there are hundreds of other tables with free spaces available.

Why Is Seat Position Important At the Poker Table?

When you are playing Texas Hold ’em it is important to have the aggressive players that have a habit of raising to your right hand side and the looser players that will simply call and check to your left. The reason for this is that by having loose players that constantly check to your left means that you can often limp in and see pots very cheaply in the knowledge that the aggressive players to your right have already folded. You can often steal the pot by making even just a modest raise if weak players are to your left. By having the aggressive players to your right you can see what their intentions are for the hand so you can get out of borderline weak hands cheaply by folding pre-flop. If the aggressive players are to your right you will always have the advantage over them as you can see what they are going to do first. If they raise and you have a strong hand such as a pocket pair you always have the option of re-raising them pre-flop. Seat position is an important element in poker as a whole, but it has major prominence in online cash games because you can actively choose the seat to sit in. If you are playing in a Sit N Go or an MTT you can’t select where to sit – you will have your seat allocated for you. Indeed, if you are in an MTT you will be moved from table to table periodically throughout the tournament. If you have done your homework and found a table that you think could be a good earner but you can’t sit to the left of the aggressive players, you should never just opt for the first seat you see on the table. You should join the waiting list for a specific seat with the table aggressors to your right, or worst case select a different table rather than sitting in a bad seat position.
